Wins "Best Energy Efficient Technology Award" from China Computerworld, Solutions Analysis Center

Longmont, CO, December 11, 2007 –COPAN Systems, the industry leader in cost-effective, Enterprise MAID storage solutions for the protection and management of persistent data, proudly accepted The Best Energy Efficient Technology Award presented by China Computerworld at the recent Green Data Center Conference in Beijing. This award was presented to COPAN Systems following an analysis by China Computerworld, Solutions Analysis Center. China Computerworld, China's largest IT publication, annually awards this prestigious recognition that underlines the heightened awareness in the Chinese market for solutions that directly attack the growing environmental crises in the data center.

COPAN Systems' storage solutions deliver unprecedented energy savings within data center environments, which are consuming massive amounts of power at a rapidly increasing rate. Purpose built to manage the unique requirements of long-term persistent data – data that is created once and rarely modified – COPAN Systems storage technology conserves energy, cooling and data center floor space costs through its Enhanced MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disk) architecture. Unlike traditional systems in which disk drives continuously spin even when not in use, COPAN Systems only powers up drives when requested by the application. This enables customers to reduce power and cooling costs by up to 85 percent, as well as reduce the solution footprint and significantly increase the life of the disks.

COPAN System's environmentally-friendly storage solution benefits include:

  • Lower total annual power cost/consumption - COPAN's MAID storage utilizes approximately 4.9 KW, while competitive VTL (Virtual Tape Library) products average nearly 23 KW. Based on an average per kilowatt hour cost of $0.11, if 50 percent of data were migrated to Enhanced MAID, the energy savings realized by the data center would be approximately $470,000 in the first year and almost $5.7 million in the fourth year, based on the current projected growth rate.

  • Lower average system heat output - The Revolution 300 product family emit approximately 16,800 BTUs/hr. per 672 TB of total capacity, compared with over 78,000 BTUs/hr. for other all-spinning, disk-based VTL systems, making COPAN Systems easier and cheaper to cool.

  • Industry-leading density and capacity -With Enhanced MAID technology, disks are packed more densely, enabling COPAN Systems' products to offer 67.2 TB/sq. ft. of raw storage – the industry's highest storage density in a single cabinet. This drives significant efficiencies in data center floor space requirements, saving six times the space compared to tradition storage array solutions.

"It is one of our cornerstone missions to promote resource efficiency in the data center," said Mark Ward, CEO and President of COPAN Systems. "With more and more persistent data being stored in the enterprise, there are no signs that data center energy demands will abate in the near future for any company with an IT infrastructure. We are thrilled that Computerworld China has recognized our contributions to help solve this important issue that will only become more critical in the coming months and years ahead."

About COPAN Systems

COPAN Systems delivers the industry’s most cost-effective storage solutions for the protection and management of persistent data. With unmatched scalability, density and power efficiency, COPAN drastically reduces the cost and complexity of vaulting and managing the overwhelming volumes of (non-transactional) information in large enterprises.

COPAN Systems' enhanced MAID platform further magnifies the advantages of disk-to-disk storage for persistent data at a lower price point than tape, making it more secure, reliable and accessible than alternative approaches.

Purpose built for massive data repositories, the platform is uniquely architected to allow for the addition of complementary storage services now and in the future.

The company is privately held with investments by Austin Ventures, Battery, Globespan Capital, Pequot Ventures, Credit Suisse, Gold Hill Capital, Presidio STX and NTT Leasing Capital (USA). COPAN Systems’ storage solutions have been shipping since March 2004, with customers spanning the healthcare, financial, government, media, and service provider industries. Solution implementations include backup/restore, archive, and disaster recovery. More information is available at http://www.COPANSystems.com.
